Innovation is a cornerstone to continued success in commerce. Take Suntory – the Japanese makers of whiskey since the early 1900s. The uber-masculine drink has sustained popularity in Japan and overseas. But in 1978 Suntory introduced a sweeter, more feminine liquor to the world. They called the drink Midori Melon and made a grand splash at Studio 54 in New York. (Just in case you’re too young to remember, Studio 54 was the disco hangout of supermodels and celebs in the ‘70s.)

Fast-forward to the new millennium, Midori Melon is still seen in the hands of the rich and famous. Kim Kardashian endorsed the product and was their spokesmodel until May 2013 (about the time mommyhood called.) At Midori-World.com, they’ve also got lots of au courant cocktail recipes.

Midori Melon is a pretty aperitif. (Midori in Japanese means green.) Poured over vanilla ice cream, the liquor creates a very nice grownup sundae. Midori Melon also adds a touch of muskmelon taste and color to the cupcakes I made for today’s SundaySupper. (Scroll down to see how you can join us at the virtual dining room table at Twitter.)

At the supper, we are celebrating Desserts In A Jar - the creation of innovator, mompreneur of 4, photographer and food blogger, Shaina Olmanson. Her cookbook has inspired many of us to create our own dessert in a jar. The how-to on my contribution follows.

Midori Melon Flower Cupcakes
1. Bake your favorite brownies in a 13 x 9 pan. Cool.
2. Cut out chocolate circles or flowers, which fit well into the bottom of your glass jars. Stack the brownies into the jars.
3. Bake cupcakes using a white cake mix per package directions, substituting the 1-cup of water for Midori Melon. Cool.
4. Whip up your favorite buttercreams, tint accordingly.
5. Go to town piping the frostings and making flowers with your star, leaf and writing tips.
6. Place cupcakes baked in flower petal baking cups or silicone flower-shaped cups on top of the brownies in the jars.
